Cantilivo

Task:

To design a cantilever arm using Popsicle sticks and adhesive that can sustain maximum load.

Event Type:

On the spot structural design event.

Technical Specifications:

  • The max. Width of the horizontal arm of cantilever must be equivalent to the length of Popsicle sticks provided.
  • The length of the arm must be 20 cm supported and 50-70 cm free.
  • The max. Height of the arm must be equivalent to the length of Popsicle stick provided.

Testing criteria:

  • The dimension of the arm will be measured and points will be awarded according to it.
  • There will be a sandbag which will be hanged at the end of the horizontal part of the structure through a strip of a cloth (or any other lightweight material)
  • One of the team members will start pouring sand in the sandbag slowly and the pouring will stop when the structure fails.
  • The weight of the sandbag will be measured and points will be given according to the judging criteria given below.

Failure:

  • The structure will be considered failed when any member or joint of the structure fails

Judgment Criteria:

  • Weight of the structure (Dead Load).
  • The dimensions of horizontal arm.
  • Load taken by the arm.
  • Points will be deducted for not satisfying the dimensions
  • Score of a team is the sum of the points based on these criteria minus penalty if any.

Material Required:

  • Popsicle Sticks
  • Adhesive (Fevicol)
  • Cutter.
    (Material will be provided on the spot)
